Preston language company wins German gas giant’s PR work

Lifeline Language Services has been selected by leading German energy company Westfalen Group to translate their press releases and news for their new English website (which Lifeline also translated…)

Westfalen originally found us via our website when they were looking for a translator for their highly technical industrial gas brochures.

The Westfalen Group is an energy sector technology company operating internationally across a total of 22 subsidiaries and associates. The family-owned business, founded in 1923, is headquartered in Münster and has over 20 production sites in Germany, France, The Netherlands, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, operating in the gas, energy supply and service stations sectors. With around 1,400 employees, the Westfalen Group posted sales of around 1.9 billion euros in the 2013 financial year.

Air separation unit

This latest project – closely followed by a major update to the company’s brochures – is the latest in a long line of over 120 assignments translated by Lifeline since 2005.

Lifeline’s Production Director Mark Everson explains “Westfalen originally found us on the web when they were looking for a translator for their highly-technical industrial gases brochures. As my first degree was in Chemical Engineering, and we already had an extensive track record in the chemicals sector, it was felt we possessed unusually good subject knowledge and that’s certainly helped – much of their material couldn’t be translated well without such good technical background. German in particular is one of those languages where lots of words have multiple interpretations and unless you really understand the subject it’s easy to get translation badly wrong!”

How badly?

“Well, while researching this project I remember seeing ‘Air Separation plant’ – the big industrial units that split oxygen, nitrogen and so on out of the air – translated on another European manufacturer’s website as ‘’pneumatic dismantling plant’… quite made my day!”

The successful Westfalen connection looks set to develop further as the company expands its operations in Europe. Westfalen’s English website is here
